5 Common DIYs That Can Destroy Your Appliance

If you've spent any time on Youtube or Instagram, you've seen the appliance "hacks." Melt the frost with a hair dryer. Line your oven with foil. Whip up your own dishwasher soap. They all sound clever, and honestly, some of them look pretty satisfying in a 30-second video.

Here's the problem: your fridge, dryer, dishwasher, oven, and stove aren't as tough as they look. Underneath the surface, they're full of plastic liners, rubber seals, fans, wiring, sensors, and finishes… all built to be cleaned and maintained in a very specific way. A trick that works fine on one model can quietly wreck another.

So before you reach for the hair dryer, the lint brush, the vinegar, the baking soda, or a sheet of foil, here are six DIYs we'd think twice about.

1. Using a Hair Dryer to Defrost the Freezer

You open the freezer and there's a layer of ice built up behind the panel, or you can hear the fan scraping against it. Grabbing a hair dryer feels like the obvious fix, not to mention recommended online. Simply blast it with heat, melt the ice, done.

Stop right here. If you take one thing away from this blog post, let it be this. DO NOT use a hair dryer on your refrigerator. We’re honestly not quite sure why so many people online swear by this one. We’re sorry to report that after that initial week or so of peaceful functional refrigeration, you’re in for a headache far worse than your initial problem. 

If you’ve been tricked by happy testimonials online and tried this, don’t feel bad, you’re far from alone. Common sense is on the side of this fix, and so are the initial results. While refrigerator manufacturers warn against the use of a hair dryer or external heat source on their product, it’s easy to dismiss this as a pursuit of perfect, certified solutions and a bias against the common DIY win. 

The problem with this hack doesn’t just lie with what you see—that oh so slight warping in the plastic backing—but what’s hidden out of sight.  If you’ve ever had the experience of taking heat to styrofoam and watching it curl up in response, imagine that reaction from your refrigerator’s hidden insulation. This usually rigid polyurethane foam is packed between the inner liner and the outer cabinet. That foam is doing most of the work of keeping cold air where it belongs. When you point concentrated heat at one spot, that heat travels through the liner and into the foam behind it. When the foam reacts, shrinking and pulling away from the liner, it leaves a void where the insulation no longer makes contact. 

That's the real risk. A scuffed liner you can see and deal with. A void inside a foamed-in cabinet, you can't. There's no reaching in to patch it. The fridge can end up with a permanent cold spot and lose efficiency in that area for good.

What to do instead: The root cause of the frost will need treatment, and we are always here to help. There is no true DIY fix, but there is a DIY patch. If you empty your fridge and freezer and unplug the unit for 24 hours to let the ice thaw naturally before plugging it back in, you can buy yourself some time (1-2 weeks for a defrost failure, the most common cause) before you need to call us. Additionally, if you really need to speed up thawing, you can take a house fan and aim it at the fridge, with the doors open, to circulate room temperature air within the unit. 

Please note that prior to a diagnostic appointment, we do need the fridge to be plugged in for 24 hours. This is so our technicians can read the frost patterns on your fridge and find the source of the malfunction. 

2. Cleaning Rubber Seals With Vinegar and Baking Soda

Vinegar and baking soda have basically become the internet's answer to everything. Stain? Vinegar. Smell? Baking soda. Appliance? Apparently both, generously applied.

We'd slow down here. Appliances rely on rubber seals and gaskets to keep water, air, and temperature exactly where they're supposed to be, and the right way to clean them really does vary by appliance and material. Vinegar is acidic. Baking soda, once it dries, can turn into a chalky residue that hides in folds and seams and doesn't want to come back out.

Manufacturers don't all agree on this one, which is kind of the point. Whirlpool recommends plain soap and water for a lot of refrigerator gaskets, while some other manufacturers do allow a properly diluted vinegar or baking-soda solution in specific spots. That inconsistency is exactly why a "hack" that's fine on one appliance can be a bad idea on the one sitting in your kitchen.

What to do instead: Don't assume vinegar and baking soda are safe for every gasket you own. Check what's actually approved for your model, and make sure any residue gets fully wiped away.

3. Lining the Oven Floor With Aluminum Foil

This one has a certain logic to it. Line the oven floor with foil, and next time something bubbles over, you just toss the foil instead of scrubbing.

Except your oven was engineered to circulate heat in a specific pattern, and a sheet of foil across the bottom can throw that off, leading to uneven or just plain worse cooking results. More seriously, manufacturers warn that foil on the oven floor can permanently damage the finish underneath. Whirlpool specifically calls this out and advises against lining the oven bottom with foil or any other liner. The foil traps and reflects heat in a spot that was never built to handle it that way.

So the trick meant to protect your oven floor ends up being the thing that damages it.

What to do instead: As annoying as it sounds, there really is no quick DIY for this. If you’re worried something may drip down from a dish or pan, place a second pan on the lower tray to catch any spills. If something does leak inside your oven, make sure to clean the residue as soon as the oven has cooled off to avoid persistent stains. 

4. Mixing Up Your Own Dishwasher or Laundry Soap

Homemade detergent recipes are everywhere, and we get the appeal: cheaper, more "natural," and there's something satisfying about feeling like you've outsmarted the detergent aisle.

Your appliance, less so. Dishwasher detergent is formulated specifically to work inside a dishwasher, and laundry detergent, especially for high-efficiency machines, is dialed in to control suds relative to how much water the machine actually uses. A homemade mix can throw all of that off and leave you with too many suds, leftover residue, or just poor cleaning performance compared to what the machine expects.

It’s tempting to think we’re just looking at the wrong recipes, but the truth is that the enzymes and chemicals within the mass produced grocery store soaps are near impossible to reproduce at home. If by some measure you find a perfect recipe and conditions to make these soaps at home, I can guarantee it will be far more expensive and time consuming than buying the detergent at the supermarket. 

What to do instead: There is no real DIY for machine soaps, but I would encourage you to take a look at the measure guidance for your laundry detergent. Overpouring detergent is an extremely common habit that sees your machine facing buildup and you facing frequent trips to restock. 

5. Scrubbing the Oven or Stove With a Baking Soda Paste

Baking soda paste is probably the internet's most-recommended oven cleaner. Mix it up, spread it on, let it sit, scrub it off. Simple enough.

We wouldn't treat it as a one-size-fits-all fix, though. Once that paste dries, it hardens, and it's genuinely hard to get out of small gaps like seams, burner openings, igniter areas, control knobs, and trim. Those are exactly the spots you don't want hardened residue building up in.

There's also the surface to think about. A lot of cooktops need nonabrasive cleaning, and Whirlpool specifically warns against abrasive powder cleaners on certain glass cooktops. To be fair, some manufacturers do allow baking soda on specific oven surfaces, but that doesn't mean it's safe for every stove, cooktop, burner, gasket, and finish out there.

What to do instead: Skip the generic baking-soda hack and clean your oven or stove the way its owner's manual actually recommends.

Three Things Worth Remembering

  1. A popular hack isn't automatically an appliance-safe one. Hair dryers, vinegar, baking soda, foil, homemade soap… all of them can cause real damage in the wrong spot.

  2. If you can't see what you're touching, don't push a tool into it. Fans and wiring are often just out of view.

  3. Your owner's manual beats an internet hack every time. Two appliances that look almost identical can have completely different care instructions.

The whole point of DIY appliance care is to help your machine last longer, not to create a second problem on top of the first. Before you try the next trending hack, it's worth checking what your manufacturer actually recommends.
