How to Save Your Dryer
This month's helpful appliance tip is all about how to prevent dryer failures and recognize the first signs that your clothes dryer may be failing. Knowing these signs can help you avoid major repair costs or even the need for a new dryer altogether.
First, let’s touch on some things you can do to avoid dryer failures in the first place. While there are some serious failures you should not attempt to fix on your own, there are a few things that you can try before calling a professional. These include:
Cleaning the lint filter: This should be done after every load, as a clogged filter can cause the dryer to overheat or not dry properly.
Cleaning the vent hose: Over time, lint and debris can build up in the vent hose, causing the dryer to overheat or not dry properly. Disconnect the hose from the dryer and the wall and use a vacuum or brush to remove the lint or call a vent cleaning company.
Checking the circuit breaker: If your dryer is not turning on, it could be a problem with the circuit breaker. Check to see if the breaker has tripped and reset it if necessary.
When to Call an Appliance Service Technician
If you notice any of the following signs, it's important to call an appliance service technician as soon as possible. Ignoring these signs can lead to further damage or even a fire hazard. Some early signs of dryer failure include:
Loud or unusual noises: If your dryer is making loud thumping, banging or squealing sounds, it could be a sign that something is wrong with the drum, belt, or rollers.
Clothes not drying properly: If you notice that your clothes are taking longer than usual to dry or come out of the dryer still damp, it could be a sign that your dryer is not heating up properly or there is an air flow restriction.
Burning smell: If you smell something burning when your dryer is in use, it could be a sign that lint or debris has built up in the vent or the dryer itself. This is a fire hazard and should be addressed immediately.
Overheating: If your dryer feels hot to the touch on the outside or if your clothes are coming out unusually hot, it could be a sign that the thermostat is not working properly.
Drum not spinning: If the drum is not spinning, it could be a sign that the belt or motor has failed.
Recognizing the first signs that your clothes dryer may be failing can save you time, money, and potentially prevent a dangerous situation. While there are a few things you can check on your own before calling a professional, remember: if you notice any of the above-mentioned signs of a serious impending failure, it's best to call an appliance service technician to diagnose and fix the issue.
