The Lesser of Two Evils

Replace your WATER FILTER instead of your Ice Maker!

Today’s refrigerators have water filters built-in to them if they have any type of ice-maker or water dispenser unit.

It's important to change their filters as often as necessary (six months to a year depending on usage and water quality). Water filters that are left in beyond a year start to deteriorate internally and the debris comes out in the water that it dispenses. If the water flow rate decreases due to a clog in the filter (and it is not corrected) it can cause the ice-maker or fill-valve to fail due to lack of water flow. Some refrigerators automatically bypass the filter if it is removed allowing the unit to continue to work and some just do not let the water flow if the filter is removed. This depends on who manufactured the fridge you have.

Having to change your filter can get expensive and annoying, but the alternative is even more inconvenient!
