Disposal Care
An easy hack to get your garbage disposal clean and fresh- safely!
Garbage disposals, by the nature of their job, can become quite smelly. Using an enzyme cleaner, or a citric acid cleaner will help with the odor, but the sludge that is in there causing the odor tends to stay there. To properly stop the odor in a disposal from coming back we must remove the cause.
First of all, never put your hand inside a disposal! Even with the power disconnected, there can be sharp things inside which can cause injury, and with the power still connected it is unthinkable what It could do.
It turns out there's actually quite a simple way to clean the inside of your disposal without risking injury and using things you have in your house already.
Simply take a tray of ice and fill the disposal with it while it is off.
Add some liquid dish soap (probably a tablespoon full) to the ice.
Run the disposal without water. It will scrape the inside of the disposal clean.
After you feel like it has turned into a proper slush, you may run some hot water to flush it all down.
In the end your disposal smells nice and is actually clean.
One disclaimer is that if your plumbing connecting to the disposal is in poor or failing condition this could push it over the edge and cause a leak. If so contact a plumber to update the drain pipes!
